United States: US President Donald Trump has renewed his call to rename the Atlantic Ocean the “American Ocean”, while saying he would not seek to rename the Mississippi River.
Trump repeated the proposal on Monday, after first raising the idea at a rally in South Carolina the previous week. At the rally, he said Google CEO Sundar Pichai had declined his request because oceans border multiple countries. Trump initially said he would probably drop the idea before adding that the Atlantic would be called the “American Ocean”.
On Monday, Trump said the United States already had a lake and a gulf that had been renamed and that he wanted a river and an ocean to follow.
His remarks came a week before the November 3 midterm elections. His approval rating stood at 31 per cent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll released the previous week, according to the supplied report.
Trump signed an executive order on 27 August directing federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario, which the United States shares with Canada, as “Lake America”. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canadians would continue to use the name Lake Ontario.
In January 2025, Trump also ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America.
